The rust is from being carried by the receiver (natural balance point on 94's) in a bare hand and not oiled afterwards. As long as you do a better job of replacing "hand oil" with gun oil, you'll be okay.
Buy some inexpensive over the counter ammo like Carver mentions and get to shooting. Unless you already have a stock pile of brass, that'll give you some to reload.

Yeah, the guy I bought it from never shot it. He bought it from a guy that needed money more than the gun. I'm not sure how long it's been collecting dust.

I do have about 100 pieces of brass already.

I go on/off on wanting a lever action. You just got me back to needing another gun!

The Model 94 30-30 I have is my least fired gun. I bought it used in 1989 and have fired it less that half a dozen times. I've thought about selling it, but everybody needs at least one lever action in their accumulation (some folks call it a collection).

No lever guns??? Well it's good to hear you came to your senses and bought one :p:D
    Congratulations!

I'll +1 that steel wool can take off more than just the rust. Get yourself some bronze wool. If you have an Ace Hardware nearby, they should have it. Otherwise, plenty to choose from online

I've always been more into bolt guns.

I'll have to check around for the bronze wool.

A decent lever rifle is like a 1911 and a good 22. Everyone needs at least one in their toy box. Well done slayer!

The 30-30 is an easy cartridge to load for. Two things to remember with it, don't use too much case lube around the shoulder and neck area, (very thin brass). The other is case length, keep your case length at plus (+) or minus (-) three thousands (.003") of an inch from your target length to get uniform crimps on your loaded ammo.

Thanks for the tip on the crimping. It should be a fun one to load for.
